Abortion is a practice of terminating pregnancy whether intentionally or unintentionally. A woman or a couple may decide to end any unwanted pregnancy for one reason or the other. Research has it that terminating pregnancy in a right way is good and useful some ways to avoid death, save life or reduce population explosion and some other factors.  But irrespective of any reasons for abortion, what does the Bible say about pregnancy? There are Bible Chapters and verses that explain Biblical views about pregnancy.

The View of the Book of Romans

The Book of Romans sees the abortion as wickedness, murder, evil, heartless and pitiless actions and attitude, foolishness, ruthlessness, hatred and all sorts of cruelty. The Book further explains that anyone who do all these face the tremendous consequences. Such people are killers. Read Romans 1: 28-32

28 “Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.”

29 “They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,”

30 “Slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;”

31 “they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.”

32 “Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.” (NIV)

Romans 1:28-32: “And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.”

The View of the Book of Number

The Book of Number in its view is that if you abort because of adultery and fornication, such a woman is under a curse. The Book continues that to avoid this, you should avoid premarital sex and extra-marital sex that can lead to abortion. Read Numbers 5:19-28 .

19 “Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, “If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you.”

20 “But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband”

21 “here the priest is to put the woman under this curse—“may the LORD cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell.”

22 “May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.” “ ‘Then the woman is to say, Amen. “So be it.”

27 “If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse.”

28 “If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children.”

The View of the Book of Proverbs

The Book of proverbs views the abortion as killing as it calls it shedding the innocent blood and God hates it. It continues that abortion is a scheme of wickedness and evil. Anyone that does this will face the consequences. Read Proverbs 6: 16-19.

16 “There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:

17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,

18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,

19 a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.”  (NIV)

Proverbs 6:16-19: “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.”

The View of the Book of Exodus

According to Exodus, the pregnant woman is so precious that nothing must be tampered with her to the extent that one will try to abort the baby prematurely. Anyone that try to abort deliberately will face the consequence of death. Read  Exodus 21:22-25 .

22 “If people are fighting and hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman’s husband demands and the court allows.

23 “But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,

24  eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.”

The View of the Book of Genesis

The Book of Genesis see the abortion as shedding of blood as God frowns at it. The Book continues that whosoever sheds human blood will have her own blood to be shed too. Read Genesis 9:5-6 .

5 “And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.”

6 “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.”

The View of the Book of Psalm

Psalmist sees any pregnancy or fruit of the womb as the of God that we are supposed to praise God for instead of terminating it. Any pregnancy formed in the womb is wonderfully done by God. It should be aborted. Read Psalms 139:13-16 .

13 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well.”

15 “My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.”

16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” (NIV).

Psalm 139:13-16 ~ For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

The View of the Book of Deuteronomy

The Book of Deuteronomy warns against abortion because it is an abominable practice. Anyone that kills her child through abortion or any other means will face thorough consequences. Two of the consequences are curses and death eventually. Read the Chapters and the verses below.

Deuteronomy 18:9-12
“When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. And because of these abominations the LORD your God is driving them out before you.” Deuteronomy 27:25
“Cursed be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.’ And all the people shall say,” Amen.

Deuteronomy 30:19-20
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore, choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”
